Who are we?

A non-profit dedicated to improving educational opportunities for children in Mexico

What do we do?

We develop community centers which focus on children at risk for early school leaving

What is our strategy?

We combine social, education and psychological  programs to achieve our goals. Our primary tool is the community tutor program which trains teens and adults to mentor primary school children.

How did we get here?

In 1988 - A group of US Peace Corps Volunteers started making biannual trips to Mexico.

In 1990 - Group builds first classroom in Ferrocarril #4, Rio Bravo Tamauilipas.

In 2001, the group formed the US Non-Profit Amigos de las Escuelas

In 2004 the group became a Mexico Non-Profit organization.

Amigos de las Escuelas is a tax-Exempt Non Profit-Service Organization registered in both Mexico and the US (501-c-3) which consists of a volunteer board, and a rotating cast of volunteers who work behind the scenes in Austin, or who make weekend trips to Rio Bravo, Mexico to do hands-on construction, painting, science demonstrations, and related work in support of elementary schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods. We also seek to provide cross-cultural experiences for volunteers from both sides of the border.
