--- Logistics
Come and work with us on one of our twice-yearly programs. Both are
4 day blocks of time, one day to drive down, two days of work, and one
day to drive back.
We caravan down, and riders share the cost of gas with the drivers.
We always need people who can drive, so that we have rides for those
who can't. Normally it costs between $15 and $30 per person for transportation.
Sometimes we rent a van, and the riders share the costs. The hotel has
gated parking, with a night security guy. There is also the
possibility of taking the bus. Tornado Bus Company and El Expresso are
two non-greyhound bus lines that have express lines to the border from
Houston Dallas and San Antonio. As of 12/06 cost was 74.00 round trip
Austin to Mc Allen. You would then be picked up by Casa de Katie staff.
This has not yet been done, so someone needs to figure out if it is
actualy feasible.
The hotel in which we stay costs about $30 per night, split between
however many (up to 4) are in your room. Or, if you prefer pitching
a tent, space in the community can be found for you.
You can spend $10 to $30 per day for food, depending on what level of
cuisine you prefer. We try to provide lunches on the site, for both
the American volunteers, and their local counterparts that come to help.
We are joined in the spring by Amigos
de las Americas from Houston and Austin. We are also supported by
the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers groups from Austin
, and sometimes Dallas
and Houston.

Have your own Project
If you are a member of an organized group, we can set up an individual
project for your group. We usually work in 4 day blocks of time, but
can accomodate you for longer blocks if that is what you want. We can
work with you to design team-building exercises, as well as meet community
service requirements for high school and college programs. Contact us
if you are interested in developing a separate project.
For participating groups, we charge $30 per person, to cover the materials
used in the work, plus, you cover your own costs of transportation,
food, and lodging.
We can meet you there, or guide you down. It is easy to get there.
